The $#*! Kids Say- NSPCC Online Advert

This online advert plays on the mimicking nature of children when growing up and playing. The first half starts with the random $#*! children say, “all pigs are pink, even boy pigs,” just enough to put a little smile on your face. The second half of advert shows the chilling reality that children do mimic their surroundings and stuff they hear adults and their parents say. Here is the unusual twist from humour to horror, when we start hearing the $#*! the children are now saying and the realisation that it is their bad experiences that they are mimicking.

I think some of the successes of this ad include the camera shots, the children are not filmed front on, instead in natural and eerily believable play scenarios, which makes you wonder how they filmed such believable dark scripts from the children. It creates a real sense of innocence that in turn increases the amount of shock & disbelief when the outcome and message of the advert is revealed. A real dramatic turn from humour to horror within a minute.

To me the cons for this advert include the title, ‘The $#*! Kids Say’. I really dislike the symbolic way of stating “Shit”, firstly as an online advert I dont think children are the intended viewer… and to be honest I think if they did, they have heard a lot worse language anyway! Secondly, the word ‘Kid’ is the dictionary definition of a baby goat, not a human child…

I think the long, slow moving zoom, child eyes staring at you, camera shot in the final scene lets this advert down a great deal. It has a fast moving tempo the whole way through, humour and horror stages, and when the slowed down sympathy shot appears, to me it makes the last impression of this advert the same as any other charity. That is a shame as it was a standout advert for this type of organisation, to me on par with the Barnardos advert by BBH earlier this year. However a good advert by Inferno.

Winning Attitude Text to my ‘Friends’

Something tells me this is going to be a great day, loving my essay, feel excited as walking to tube station. I look like a dominant figurehead of society, haircuts a little short but I have nice ears so that’s okay. Lovely choice of jacket and jeans, grabbing a baguette like a true cultured citizen, won’t drop any filling on my shirt. Wearing my terrific Todds newly brushed. Suns out and life’s great. Watch out Ogilvy!

My ‘friends’ reply…
Hahaha you pleb
And…
You’re an idiot haha.

Lesson learnt:
1) positive attitude makes people digitally laugh
2) I figured out its my friends who keep me grounded… Thanks guy!
